February 2008: The trees are cut

There are plenty of trees in the Yukon, but not all of them are suitable for building a log house. They have to be tall spruce trees of straight growth, not too thick and not too slim, and with a log diameter as consistent as possible. Down the lake, on the sunny side, we found a suitable timber site. The trees are carefully selected, cut and measured, then limbed and stored.

A tree is selected...  ...and cut  In total we need 80 logs.

The log is limbed...  ...cut to the desired length...  ...and the dimensions listed.

The debris are cut to firewood...  ...and the brush piles are burnt.  Finally, the logs are stored.
